Radiohead's Phil Selway Quits Samaritans

He was recruited as a counselor back in the '90s but the drummer realized that the organization deserves a total commitment.

Radiohead rocker Phil Selway has quit working as a volunteer for emotional support group Samaritans after almost 20 years. The drummer joined the organization as a counselor in 1991, a year before the "Creep" hitmakers released their debut single.

He continued to provide help and support even after the band gained massive international stardom in the mid-1990s, but has now revealed he left his role with Samaritans two years ago. Selway admits he no longer has enough time in his busy schedule to devote to the work - but is proud of his time with the organization.

He tells Mojo magazine, "I'm not (a Samaritans counsellor anymore). I got to the point a couple of years ago where I realized that you really need to have a time commitment to do it properly. There's no other way. As a volunteer it's incredibly fulfilling work. Just having that contact cuts through so much because you're in there at a very honest, intimate level. It felt like a very privileged place to be."
