Sylvester Stallone is the new king of the U.K. box office after his blockbuster "The Expendables" exploded into the charts with takings of $5.9 million. The action movie, starring Stallone alongside Jet Li and Jason Statham, and featuring cameos from Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger, ended "Toy Story 3" 's reign at the top of the chart.
Angelina Jolie's new spy thriller "Salt" entered into second place with takings of $3.2 million, knocking animated movie "Toy Story 3" into third place with a haul of $3 million. Flesh-eating fish movie "Piranha 3-D" and "Marmaduke", both new releases, took the fourth and fifth positions respectively.
Stateside, "The Expendables" debuted at No. 1 with an estimated $35 million revenue, knocking off former champ "The Other Guys" and winning over another new release "Eat, Pray, Love" which is targeted for female audience. It extended another week on the first place in its second weekend with an additional $17 million.
