Spanish tenor Jose Carreras will return to Italy's revered La Scala opera house for a charity concert later this year, marking his first appearance at the iconic venue since 1996. The opera star will headline a benefit for the European Society for Medical Oncology in October.

He last performed at Milan's La Scala in a production of Giordano's Fedora. The cause is one close to Carreras' heart - he underwent treatment for leukemia in 1987 and set up a research foundation for the disease in 1988.

Jose Carreras was part of the "Three Tenors", along with Luciano Pavarotti, who died almost three years ago after battling pancreatic cancer, and Placido Domingo, who sang at La Scala in April just weeks after colon cancer surgery.
