Casey Affleck, who works the documentary about his brother-in-law, has his project picked up by bosses at Magnolia Pictures who will release it on September 10.

Casey Affleck's quirky documentary about brother-in-law Joaquin Phoenix's bid to become a hip-hop star has been picked up by bosses at Magnolia Pictures. The film, "I'm Still Here: The Lost Year of Joaquin Phoenix", will be released in America on September 10.

The documentary chronicles a year in Phoenix's life after he publicly gave up acting and tried to establish himself as a rap star.

Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles confirmed to Deadline about the release. Bowles said, "No matter what I thought coming in, I came out feeling this was a pretty amazing piece of work, jaw-dropping but dimensional. It is going to get a lot of attention, but it is not some cheap stunt where they said, 'Let's do some wild stuff and film it'."

He added, "It is extreme behavior but really good filmmaking as well. Frankly, some of the behavior is very extreme. But it is in the context of the insanity of being in Joaquin's life for that period of time. It is a unique piece of work that is going to surprise people in different ways."
