"An Education" star Alfred Molina's final week on Broadway in hit play "RED" has shattered box office records at the Golden Theater. The production, which picked up the lion's share of prizes at the recent Tony Awards, broke the house record last week with a $724,156 gross for eight performances.
The record was previously set by Avenue Q at the end of 2006. "RED", which was named Best Play at the Tony Awards, recouped its $2.25 million production costs the week before. The play opened to critical acclaim in March.
In 2010 Tony Awards, "RED" won for Best Play, Best Director, Best Featured Actor (Eddie Redmayne), Best Set, best Lightning and Best Sound Design. The production also won three Drama Desk Awards, including Best Play and Best Director, and the Outer Critics Circle and Drama League Awards for Best Play.
