Clay Aiken Hopes to Replace Simon Cowell as 'American Idol' Judge

Clay Aiken

The FOX hit talent search's alum admits that he wants to serve behind the judge panel because he 'knows what it's like to be up on that stage and be critiqued.'

Former "American idol" star Clay Aiken has added his name to the list of possible replacements for departed judge Simon Cowell. Elton John, Harry Connick Jr. and another former Idol, Adam Lambert, have emerged as the fan favorites to take over from Cowell, but Aiken thinks he's the man for the job.

He tells Billboard, "I've always thought it would be a great addition to the panel to have someone who's a former contestant and knows what it's like to be up on that stage and be critiqued. I would not put myself out there to be as caustic as he (Cowell) is, but if they (producers) want to call me, bring it on. We can talk."

When talking about his fifth album, Clay Aiken tells the site, "I like songs that have incredible melodies and nice orchestrations and arrangements that are really about the voice and the melody and just being beautiful, and these songs are that. People talk about it being a big decision to change course, but I actually see it as an opportunity to kind of get back to what I've always wanted to do."

I'd be thrilled with the amazingly talented Harry Connick JR. or the ever enduring rocker, Bret Michaels. Both have been " around the block" quite a few times and would base their comments & decisions on a contestants talents without making this position a forum for any personal agendas like I believe Howard or Clay would. This show was a spring board for Clay years ago and I don't feel he has a right to a second bite at this particular apple. Howard Stern is a pig and I don't think the contestants who are putting their hearts, souls, and talents into their performances should all have to become "Bikini Girl" for his pleasure. Let's have SOME class. Go with Harry or Bret.

I really like Clay, but not as a judge. I use to to watch " AMERICAN IDOL" all the time. Have not watched it for sometime now. Just lost interest in it. Love America has talent. Howie is a welcome addition.

I realize it's not even a rumor, but I wish it were. Clay would be a phenomenal judge. He's honest, forthright, knowledgeable and amazingly funny. He'd truly jazz up that mostly over-the-hill show. Plus he still has a huge fanbase that would jump at the chance to see their idol on the tube every week. I think Clay, more than anyone else, could bring American Idol back to life.

As you know, your story is not what he said in the article. In the Billboard article, Clay made a joke about this and anyone who read it knows it was snark. You really are lying with the headline.....but what else should we expect from here.

Oh pullleeeseeeeee! Bad enough we had to endure Ellen's jokes this season. I like Ellen on her own show, but she was awful on Idol. The show will never be the same without Simon.
