'Alice in Wonderland' to Hit 1 Billion Mark Worldwide

The Disney movie by Tim Burton is also the only successful springtime film to hit the huge mark in international box office.

"Alice in Wonderland" is set to become the only film released in springtime to make $1 billion at the global box office. The Disney 3D adventure, which sees Tim Burton take on the classic Lewis Carroll tale, has pulled in a staggering $996 million across the world since its release in April. It is expected to pass the $1 billion mark on Thursday, May 27 due to its current success at the Japanese box office.

The film is the second highest-grossing Disney movie in history - the studio's previous Johnny Depp film, "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest", garnered $1.7 billion in 2006. "Alice in Wonderland" will be the only billion-dollar film release to hit cinemas outside the usual Christmas or summertime blockbuster periods.

Disney executive David Kornblum says, "It's an amazing result. Alice in Wonderland has reinvented the culture of cinema-going in a big way. This was a truly unique result, given the time period, and validates that the movie business is a 52-week business." Avatar", "Titanic" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" are the only other films to hit the mark.
