Cannes Film Festival Struggles to Clean Damage After Hit by Waves

The show organizers believe the wreckage caused by 32-foot waves earlier this week will be cleared before the event is kicked off on May 12.

Cannes Film Festival organizers are rushing to clean up severe damage caused by freak waves in the south of France before the launch of the movie spectacle later this months. Earlier this week, on May 3, the coastal resort was hit by 32-foot (10 meters) waves, which caused millions of Euros worth of damage and overturned cars and flooded seaside shops and cafes.

But festival organizers insist the wreckage will be cleared in time for the event, which will open with an all-star screening of Russell Crowe's "Robin Hood" blockbuster on May 12. City councillor David Lisnard says, "There has been major damage. We were only just beginning to set up. We will need several days to clean up, but it should all be ready on time."

The 12-day festival draws thousands of people annually and is expected to host up to 10,000 movie industry workers this year.
