Through his lawyer, the 'Shooter' actor argues that his marriage to and divorce from his 'Cruel Intentions' co-star are completely irrelevant to ex-girlfriend Elsie Hewitt's lawsuit.

AceShowbiz - Ryan Phillippe has asked a judge to prevent his ex-wife Reese Witherspoon from testifying about their marriage in an assault case involving his ex-girlfriend.

The "Shooter" actor is accused of assaulting his former flame Elsie Hewitt, who sued him for $1 million in damages alleging he pushed her down a flight of stairs twice while hurling expletives at her as she attempted to leave his house with her belongings in July, 2017.

Now Phillippe has asked a judge to block Witherspoon, the mother of two of his children who he divorced in 2007 after eight years of marriage, from testifying about their collapsed union in the case, insisting the information is completely irrelevant to the current proceedings.

"Although divorced, they maintain a pleasant relationship with each other and their child (sic)," his lawyer writes in new documents obtained by The Blast. "The nature of their marriage and its termination, as well as their ongoing relationship could only be used in this trial for improper purposes."

Besides asking for the deposition requests for Witherspoon filed by Hewitt's lawyers to be denied, Phillippe also wants evidence of previous police reports filed against him and information about his other past relationships to be kept out of the case.

A judge has yet to rule on his requests.

Phillippe has denied any wrongdoing with Hewitt, claiming he simply fell as he was trying to escort her out of his house and that the incident has been blown out of proportion.
