Federal police are looking into whether or not the rocker committed a crime by engaging in sexually explicit communications with an underage fan.

AceShowbiz - The FBI has opened an investigation into Ryan Adams following an expose by The New York Times that accused him of emotional abuse and sexual misconduct on multiple women, including his ex-wife Mandy Moore. Federal police are particularly looking into the rocker's texts and messages to determine whether or not he committed a crime by engaging in sexually explicit communications with an underage girl.

An FBI official, who refused to be named, told The Times that the agents have taken the first steps to open a criminal investigation in Ryan's alleged sexts with the girl. The agents from the Crimes Against Children Squad will first seek to interview the woman, who is identified by her middle name Ava, and try to obtain the text messages and any other evidence she may have in her possession.

Ava said she was a 14-year-old fan of Ryan when she began corresponding with the former Whiskeytown member in 2013. She told The Times that he would send her graphic images and expose himself during phone sex over a nine-month period when she was 15 and 16.

The woman, who is now 20, admitted she sometimes lied about her age and told him she was older than she was. Ryan didn't seem convinced, but that didn't stop him, according to Ava. They never met in person.

Ryan's lawyer Andrew B. Brettler denied that the singer ever had these exchanges with Ava. "Mr. Adams unequivocally denies that he ever engaged in inappropriate online sexual communications with someone he knew was underage," the lawyer said.

Ryan himself took to Twitter to deny the allegations. "I am not a perfect man and I have made many mistakes. To anyone I have ever hurt, however unintentionally, I apologize deeply and unreservedly," he wrote on Wednesday, February 13.

He added, "But the picture that this article paints is upsettingly inaccurate. Some of its details are misrepresented; some are exaggerated; some are outright false. I would never have inappropriate interactions with someone I thought was underage. Period."

Meanwhile, Mandy Moore has received support from fellow celebrities after detailing the emotional abuse she suffered at the hands of Ryan during their marriage. The "This Is Us" star claimed he was controlling and tried to manipulate her career during a very pivotal time in her mid-to-late 20s.

The 34-year-old actress/singer posted on Instagram after the expose to Ryan was published, "Speaking your truth can be painful and triggering but it's always worth it. My heart is with all women who have suffered any sort of trauma or abuse. You are seen and heard. #sisterhoodforever."
