Morton, who was married to the 73-year-old Canadian singer for 39 years, lost her battle against cancer on New Year's Day.

AceShowbiz - Rocker Neil Young's former wife, Pegi, has died.

Pegi Morton, who started her music career late singing backup for her then-husband in the mid-1990s, lost her battle with cancer on New Year's Day (January 01). She was 66.

She also fronted her own band, called The Survivors

Born Margaret Morton, Pegi was married to Neil Young from 1977 until their acrimonious split in 2016. The rocker went on to wed actress Daryl Hannah last year (2018). Pegi shared three children with her ex.

Paying tribute to Pegi on Wednesday, January 02, longtime friend Graham Nash, who performed with Neil in Crosby, Stills & Nash, said, "Pegi was a very strong woman in many ways, certainly a lady to be admired."

Away from the music, Pegi co-founded California's Bridge School to help mentally handicapped and speech impaired children after struggling to find a school for her son Ben, who was born with cerebral palsy.

She also served as president of the Bridge School's board of directors and the foundation's executive director for seven years.

Pegi helped her ex stage the annual Bridge School Benefit concerts, which raised money for the school. Their efforts brought Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Elton John, Pearl Jam, and Willie Nelson, among others to the charity bash each year.
