James Wan and 'The Nun' Writer Team Up for Zombie-Themed 'Train to Busan' Remake

New Line Cinema has won the bidding war for the remake to the 2016 hit Korean zombie film which will be produced by the 'Insidious' director and written by Gary Dauberman.

AceShowbiz - "Train to Busan" is heading to Hollywood. James Wan, who directed "Insidious" and the two "The Conjuring" movies, is teaming up with "The Nun" write Gary Dauberman to bring the remake to the 2016 hit Korean zombie film.

On Tuesday, September 25, New Line Cinema came out on top of a bidding war for the English-language remake rights of "Train to Busan" and is in the process of finalizing deals. Other studios vying for the movie were Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Lionsgate Films and Screen Gems.

Wan will produce alongside original rightsholder Gaumont and Atomic Monster's president of production Michael Clear, while Dauberman will write the script. Other details of the remake are currently unavailable.

Yeon Sang Ho directed the original movie, which starred Gong Yoo, Jung Yu Mi and Ma Dong Seok among others. It follows passengers on a train from Seoul to Busan when a zombie virus suddenly breaks out in South Korea and compromises the safety of the passengers. As they struggle to survive, a workaholic and absentee father tries to protect his daughter at all cost, presenting an emotional story that touched the hearts of the audience.

The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and received critical acclaims. It was a box office hit in the country, setting a record as the first Korean film of 2016 to reach over 10 million theatergoers. It grossed $93.1 million worldwide, and became the highest-grossing Korean film in Malaysia, Hong Kong as well as Singapore.

A sequel to the Korean film is currently in development, Yeon Sang Ho has confirmed. According to the director's representative, "the film will revisit the same zombie virus that was seen in the original movie, except this time the focus will be expanded to the entire Korean peninsula." Filming is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2019, but no actors are attached to the project just yet.
