The costumes include garments from his shows in the 1970s as well as pieces from his latest trek.

AceShowbiz - Elton John is reportedly set to showcase his original stage costumes in a new exhibition.

The 71-year-old superstar is gearing up to embark on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which is set to kick off in Allentown, Pennsylvania in September.

And according to The Daily Mirror, Elton is also planning an exhibition to show off his costumes, including garments from his shows in the 1970s as well as pieces from his latest trek which have been created for him by designers at Italian fashion house Gucci.

"I have kept most of them. There is a new capsule Gucci collection. I can't believe I wore some of those things. I still love them as they are part and parcel of me," he said of his flamboyant tour wardrobe.

"You have got to be who you are. Now I am older we are going to have exhibitions of it all going all around the world. It has been useful. Once I thought: 'Why are we keeping all this stuff?' But now I am in the latter years of my life it is going to be very useful for my children to see."

Should Elton's exhibition come together, he will follow in the footsteps of the late David Bowie, who had a sell-out retrospective at London's Victoria and Albert Museum in 2013.

Back in January, the Tiny Dancer hitmaker announced he would step down from touring after one more stint around the world. He will perform 300-plus concerts over the next three years.

Elton's husband David Furnish, 55, and their two children, Zachary and Elijah, will reportedly accompany him for much of the tour.
