Piers Morgan confirms that the former lighting director was only paid 'a small amount of money' because he wanted to use his airtime to 'be very praiseworthy of Harry.'

AceShowbiz - Thomas Markle was paid for an exclusive interview with British broadcaster ITV.

The hosts of British breakfast show Good Morning Britain, Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid spoke to Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex's father via satellite on Monday, June 18.

And after U.K. news outlets claimed the former lighting director had been paid $9,882 (£7,500) Piers confirmed to U.S. website Entertainment Tonight that the 73-year-old had been paid for the interview, but it was a small amount.

"Well, it was a small amount of money, a few thousand pounds," Piers shared. "He was offered stratospherically lots more money by different media organisations. He could've made a lot more money doing what he wanted to do."

The interview took place just weeks after Thomas admitted he'd made a "serious mistake" by posing for fake paparazzi photos.

But Piers insisted Thomas' intentions were honest, adding that the Mexico resident wanted to use his airtime to "be very praiseworthy of Harry."

"It wasn't about money for him, you can tell that," he asserted. "The real motivation was setting the record straight, having his say."

Due to health complications, Thomas was forced to pull out of walking his daughter down the aisle at her wedding to British royal Prince Harry on 19 May, with Prince Charles instead doing the honours at St George's Chapel in Windsor, England.

"He's made some bad mistakes, my god, he's been punished for it," continued Piers, who described Thomas as a "very decent, regular" guy.

"As he said, it cost him, really, the trip to go walk his daughter down the aisle because all the stress and pressure from his own bad behaviour boiled over and he couldn't get the flight."
