The young musician has been tapped to take on the lead role in the Julie Hart-directed movie.

AceShowbiz - Child star Grace VanderWaal is preparing to make her acting debut in new Disney film Stargirl.

The young singer/songwriter, who shot to fame after winning reality show America's Got Talent in 2016, has been tapped to lead the cast in the upcoming original movie, directed by Julia Hart.

Grace, 14, beat out 700 other hopefuls to score the coveted gig in the screen adaptation of author Jerry Spinelli's young adult novel of the same name.

"I knew she was Stargirl almost immediately," Hart tells Deadline.com. "The world knows what a talented performer she is, and I cannot wait for everyone to see just how many sides there are to this special and magical young woman."

Ironically, the character of Stargirl also sings and plays the ukulele, a talent Grace displayed during her rise to TV stardom.

Hart has a knack for spotting emerging acting talent - she was also an early fan of Call Me by Your Name Oscar nominee Timothee Chalamet and cast him in her 2016 directorial debut Miss Stevens.

Stargirl is set to begin production in September. It will premiere on Disney's forthcoming streaming service, which is expected to launch in late 2019.
