The on-again/off-again project has fallen apart as the supposedly lead actor Jason Momoa and director Corin Hardy just stepped down.

AceShowbiz - Jason Momoa and filmmaker Corin Hardy left the long-planned reboot of "The Crow", which was supposed to start production this month. The "Game of Thrones" star took to Instagram on Thursday, May 31 to confirm that the project has fallen apart with a black-and-white picture of him and Corin.

"I've waited 8 years to play this dream role. I love you @corinhardy and @sonypictures unfortunately I may have to wait 8 more. Not our team," he wrote. "James O'Barr sorry to let you down I won't on the next. This film needs to be set free. And to the fans. Sorry," Momoa apologized to "The Crow" comic creator and fans. "I can't play anything but what this film deserves and it needs love. I'm ready when it's right," he explained his reason.

I’ve waited 8 years to play this dream role. I love you @corinhardy and @sonypictures unfortunately I may have to wait 8 more. Not our team. But I swear I will. A source tells Deadline that the actor and the director formally withdrew from the film this morning due to creative and financial differences with film producer Samuel Hadida from Davis Films. Hadida is the one who holds the film rights and is financing the project.

The remake project has been in development since at least 2009 but has run into obstacles, most notably the bankruptcy of Relativity Media. During that time, the project had passed through different directors such as Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, Stephen Norrington, Javier Gutierez and Corin Hardy. Earlier this year, Sony Pictures announced that the film was supposed to be released on October 11, 2019.

However, Alex Proyas, who directed the original film, disliked the remake project. He stated that the remake was disrespectful to the memory of fallen star Brandon Lee who died during the production of the original movie.

Brandon Lee starred as Eric Draven in 1994's "The Crow". The film was adapted from James O'Barr's cult comic which was first published in 1989. The story revolves around the main character, Eric Draven, who's resurrected from his death to seek revenge against people who killed him and his fiancee.
