A new report suggests that the Prince of Wales could do the honor, but only if his son and the bride ask him to do so.

AceShowbiz - After Meghan Markle confirmed that her father, Thomas Markle, would no longer walk her down the aisle, many are curious to know who will be taking the role as a replacement for her dad. Words are, her future father-in-law Prince Charles may step in to fulfill the duty.

According to E! News, the Prince of Wales could do the honor, but only if his son and the bride ask him to do so. Carolyn Harris, a royal historian, also tells the site that "there certainly has been speculation Prince Charles might assume this role." Furthermore, Meghan seems to have a good relationship with Charles as she and Harry are postponing honeymoon to attend Charles' birthday celebration.

There is also a speculation that her mom, Doria Ragland, may take on the role on the big day. Should the speculation be true, this won't be the first time a woman has escorted her daughter in a royal wedding. Queen Victoria gave away her youngest child, Princess Beatrice, in 1885 when she married Prince Henry of Battenberg.

In addition, Carolyn notes that it's "quite possible" for Harry and Meghan to walk down the aisle together. She shares that the royal couple is "very much placing their own stamp on the wedding preparations and customizing things according to their preferences and circumstances." There's another possibility that Meghan may walk herself down the aisle. Carolyn says, "She's very much spoken about women's empowerment and women's independence."

Meghan announced in a statement on May 17 that her father would not be attending her wedding to Harry. "Sadly, my father will not be attending our wedding. I have always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health," she shared. "I would like to thank everyone who has offered generous messages of support. Please know how much Harry and I look forward to sharing our special day on Saturday."

Harry and Meghan will tie the knot at St. George's Chapel on May 19.
