'American Idol' Recap: Katy Perry Gushes Over Frenemy Taylor Swift as More Singer-Songwriters Come

During the Sunday, March 18 episode of the revived show, one failed contestant made Katy uncomfortable after bringing the 'Blank Space' hitmaker into the topics.

AceShowbiz - American Idol aired its third episode on Sunday, March 18 on ABC. The episode featured more eager hopefuls auditioning, hoping they would get a chance to head over to Hollywood to compete on the revived show. The first singer to perform before judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie was Crystal Alicea. She showed off her delicate voice while belting out "Lay Me Down" by Sam Smith and went to the Hollywood as the judges gave her a "yes."

The second artist was a country singer named Kristyn Harris. Singing "Cowboy's Sweetheart", Kristyn also flaunted her yodelling skills. Lionel and Luke voted for her, while Katy thought that she wasn't right for the show.

Johnny Brenns was the first singer-songwriter that night. He performed a gentle ballad titled "Blue Jeans", but judges asked for more. Later, Katy and Luke were perfectly convinced that Johnny was meant for the show, while Lionel said, "no."

The next artist was Ricky Manning, another singer-songwriter. Ricky previously competed on "The Voice" and made it to live playoffs on Gwen Stefani's team. He sang his original song titled "L.A. Is Lonely" and earned a golden ticket for his stunning performance.

Tyler Gordon hoped that his ability to sing six different octaves would earn him a "yes," but judges thought that it was over the top and Tyler was forced to head back home. He was followed by Johnny White who performed "It's A Man's Man's Man's World". He awed the judges and with no surprise, the judges voted him through to Hollywood,

Caleeb Lee Hutchinson performed next, singing The SteelDrivers' "If It Hadn't Been for Love". His deep voice convinced the judges, who all gave him a "yes." Despite her age, 17-year-old Shannon O'Hara nailed Adele's "When We Were Young". Accompanied by herself on the piano, Shannon showcased her stunning vocals. She move forwards to the next round.

Amelia Hammer Harris opted for a rendition of "Gimme Shelter" by The Rolling Stones". Katy loved it and even called her "top 10." She's going to Hollywood.

Before moving on to the next performers, a bunch of clips of failed hopefuls were shown. One of them apologized to Katy for loving the music from her frenemy Taylor Swift. It rather made Katy uncomfortable, but she told the contestant that she loves Taylor as a songwriter as well.

It was followed by Ryan Zamo. He performed Katy's favorite song, "Gravity" by Sara Bareilles. Unfortunately, the judges were not impressed and he walked away without the ticket. Milo & Julian Spasato later sang Bruno Mars' "Runaway Baby" and it was "dope," according to Katy. They got the ticket.

Joining the Spasatos in getting the ticket was Les Greene. He got three yes votes after singing Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come". Later, Maddie Zahm performed "New Rules" by Dua Lipa. She even had a duet moment with Katy, singing the latter's hit "Firework". She soared to the Hollywood.
