'Wonder Woman 2' Close to Nabbing Kristen Wiig as Its Villain

The 'Downsizing' star is in talks to play the villain role of Cheetah in the sequel to be directed by Patty Jenkins.

AceShowbiz - Kristen Wiig may antagonize Diana Prince in "Wonder Woman 2". The "Saturday Night Live" alum is the top choice to the play the villain role of Cheetah in the sequel to the 2017 blockbuster and critically-acclaimed superhero movie. Various sites report that she has been in talks for the role, but Warner Bros. won't comment on the potential casting.

That Hashtag Show previously reported that the clawed supervillain would be the central antagonist in the "Wonder Woman" sequel. It was reported that "The Amazing Spider-Man" star and Oscar-winning actress Emma Stone was offered the role, but she turned it down.

There are four different incarnations since the character's debut. The cinematic iteration of the character is said to be based on the current Cheetah Barbara Ann Minerva. Minerva is a British anthropologist and heiress who gains the powers of the cheetah after an expedition to an African jungle.

Plot details of "Wonder Woman 2" are still scarce, but it is said to be set in the '80s during the waning days of the Cold War. Gal Gadot will reprise her role as the titular superheroine, with Chris Pine, Said Taghmaoui and Ewen Bremner also returning. Additionally, Lynda Carter, who played the original Wonder Woman on the 1970s TV show, was said to be circling a role in the sequel.

Patty Jenkins, who directed the first movie, will return for the sequel. Besides taking the helming duty, Jenkins is writing the script along with Dave Callahan and Geoff Johns. Deborah and Zack Snyder are serving as producers.

The DC-Warner Bros' movie is slated for release on November 1, 2019 in the United States, with filming expected to begin on May 28 in London.

Wiig was a regular player on NBC's long-running sketch series "Saturday Night Live" from 2005 until 2012. She's also known for her roles in such films as "Bridesmaids", "The Martian" and "Ghostbusters (2016)". Her latest acting credits include "Despicable Me 3", "Downsizing" and "mother!".
