The estranged couple reportedly saw each other 'one last time' late at night on Valentine's Day in L.A., before announcing their separation the next day.

AceShowbiz - Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux met up on Valentine's Day, but unlike most happy couples who spent it in romantic ways, the exes were talking about their split. According to a source close to the actress, the estranged spouses saw each other "one last time" that night before announcing their separation the next day.

"They saw each other late at night on Valentine's Day in L.A.," the source tells PEOPLE. "They decided together that they would make the announcement the next day. Justin flew on a private jet to L.A. to see Jen one last time."

The so-called insider says the former couple initially disagreed on when to announce the breakup news, with the "Mother's Day" actress hoping to continue to keep the matter private for as long as they could to avoid the media attention. "Jen didn't want to announce it for as long as possible, because she wanted to avoid the media attention," the source explains.

The split announcement came just days after Aniston celebrated her 49th birthday with her friends without Theroux in sight. The "Friends" alum gathered her gal pals, including BFF Courteney Cox, her manager Aleen Keshishian, Andrea Bendewald, Leigh Kilton-Smith and Kristin Hahn, at Cox's Malibu house on February 11.

The source adds, "Jen hoped that Justin would be low-key on her birthday so people weren't wondering why he wasn't with her. But that's not Justin's style. He wanted to make the announcement so he can live his life."

Aniston and Theroux, who tied the knot on August 5, 2015 after dating for more than four years, decided to go separate ways after two years of marriage. They said in a statement, "In an effort to reduce any further speculation, we have decided to announce our separation. This decision was mutual and lovingly made at the end of last year. We are two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple, but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship."

Words are being apart brought the end to their marriage, with Aniston "more comfortable in Los Angeles with her close-knit group of friends" while Theroux "loves New York," where he owns a place in Greenwich Village.
