Petition Launched to Axe Matt Damon From 'Ocean's 8' After Controversial Sex Comments

An online petition demanding the producers of the upcoming female-driven heist movie to cut the actor's cameo has nearly reached its goal of 18,000 signatures.

AceShowbiz - Matt Damon may be out of Warner Bros.' upcoming heist movie "Ocean's 8" following his controversial comments on sexual misconduct in Hollywood. An online petition has been launched demanding the producers of the heist movie, George Clooney, Steven Soderbergh and Susan Ekins, to cut the actor's cameo in the all-female spin-off of the "Ocean's" trilogy which is "supposed to be an empowering film for women."

The petition, which has nearly reached its goal of 18,000 signatures, reads, "This behavior is beyond enabling - it's just gross," referring to the 47-year-old actor's comments on sexual abuse that were deemed not appropriate by many.

"Matt Damon should not be in this movie," it said. People claimed "Damon's inclusion (in the movie) would trivialize the serious nature of the charges against sexual abusers like [Harvey] Weinstein -- a show of massive disrespect for the brave women speaking out."

The petition claimed that if the producers didn't remove Damon's cameo from the movie, it would show a "lack of accountability for sexual harassment in the workplace that four in ten American women experience."

"Ocean's 8", which stars Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway and Rihanna among others, is due out in the United States on June 8, 2018 and has already released its first trailer, though Damon is not seen in it.

In an interview with Business Insider, when asked if he would work with people accused of sexual assault, Damon answered that he would consider it on a "case-by-case" basis. "That always went into my thinking," he said. "But the question of if somebody had allegations against them, you know, it would be a case-by-case basis. You go, 'What's the story here?' "

"We're in this watershed moment, and it's great, but I think one thing that's not being talked about is there are a whole s**tload of guys - the preponderance of men I've worked with - who don't do this kind of thing and whose lives aren't going to be affected," said the actor, who was promoting his new movie "Downsizing".

"If I have to sign a sexual-harassment thing, I don't care, I'll sign it," he said. "I would have signed it before. I don't do that, and most of the people I know don't do that."

When appearing on ABC News' "Popcorn With Peter Travers" earlier this month, Damon also said, "We're going to have to figure -- you know, there's a difference between, you know, patting someone on the butt and rape or child molestation, right?" He added, "Both of those behaviors need to be confronted and eradicated without question, but they shouldn't be conflated, right?"
