AceShowbiz - "Outlander" stars Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan once again grace the cover of EW. Ahead of the show's return, the magazine releases three covers featuring the on-screen couple. The photos were taken in South Africa, where the third season of Starz's hit series was filmed. The first two covers feature Balfe and Heughan alone, while the third one has the couple together.
Other pictures from the cover shoot have also made their way out online, showing the two getting steamy on the sand. They're also posing in the water and on the deck of a masted vessel, which doubles as the Artemis.
"I loved it," Balfe says of filming the third season in South Africa, where the weather is so much different than in Scotland. "I think it was definitely tough sometimes just because it was hot and that's something we're not always used to. And the scripts were quite physically intensive. Either you're out on the beaches all day or traipsing through a jungle. But I relished the chance to get down and dirty. So it's good."
She also talks about filming the scenes set on the ship. "It looks amazing but every time you shoot in any of these ship sets, we have them replicated indoors," Balfe shares. "It's very cramped and hot and sweaty and smells not good."

EW has also got its hands on three new photos from season 3. One of them features heavily pregnant Claire (Balfe) with her her 20th century husband Frank (Tobias Menzies). Balfe gushes about the couple's relationship, "The relationship we all want is Claire and Jamie but the relationship most of us get or have had is Claire and Frank. It just feels very real and it's tragic. These are two good people, they're trying to do their best, but they're just never going to be able to give each other what they need, and that's very fertile ground for good drama."
Another picture sees Claire nursing a man and the third image shows Jamie as a prisoner. "In the space of five episodes, I go from the huge battle to having lost everything, living in a cave, living in his memories of Claire, and then finding some sort of peace and freedom," Heughan dishes on his character.

Based on "Voyager", the third book in Diana Gabaldon's book series, the third season follows Jamie who suffers from the aftermath of his doomed last stand at the historic battle of Culloden, as well as the loss of Claire. Separated by continents and centuries, Claire and Jamie must find their way back to each other.
The time-crossing love story returns for the new season on Sunday, September 10 at 8 P.M. on Starz.
