Mahershala Ali Is Fighting Inner Demons in Jay-Z's New Video for 'Adnis'

The poignant clip reflects Jay-Z's complicated relationship with his late father, Adnis Reeves, who abandoned him when he was a child.

AceShowbiz - Jay-Z's bonus track for "4:44" titled "Adnis" was released along with its compelling visuals on July 28. The Tidal exclusive clip finds Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali sparring, seemingly fighting his inner demons, while Donald Glover plays his coach.

The clip is rich in symbolism. It mostly shows Ali punching the bag and staring longingly and angrily into space. Donald steps in towards the end of the video, playing a father figure as he holds the heavy bag while Ali takes vicious swings at it.

Directed by Mark Romanek, the pensive visuals seems to match the emotional track, which is an ode to Jigga's late father, Adnis Reeves. The song has poetic lyrics which include, "Uh, letter to my dad that I never wrote/ Speeches I prepared that I never spoke/ Words on a paper that I never read/ Proses never penned, they stayed in my head/ Jotted on dotted lines, 'I'mma fight you, n***a'/ From stories I heard, I'm just like you, n***a."

Adnis abandoned Jay-Z when he was 11 years old, but the two eventually reconciled in 2003. Unfortunately, in the same year, Adnis died from liver failure. The rapper previously released a snippet of the song on Father's Day 2017 to honor his dad.
