Universal's 'Scarface' Remake Parts Ways With David Ayer Over 'Too Dark' Script

Though a certain amount of darkness would be necessary for the movie, Ayer's take on the script was allegedly 'too dark' for the studio's taste.

AceShowbiz - Universal's "Scarface" remake has to continue its difficult quest in finding a new director after parting ways with David Ayer. According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, the reason the studio has let go of Ayer is their creative differences.

Given that "Scarface" is, as one source put it, "the holy grail of contemporary gangster movies," a certain amount of darkness would be necessary. However, multiple sources have told the site that Ayer's take on the script was "too dark" for the studio's taste.

The studio has been in the search of a director for a long time. Before Ayer was attached to the project, director Antoine Fuqua ("Training Day", "The Equalizer") was among well-known filmmakers who were once on board to serve behind the lens, but he dropped out due to scheduling conflicts.

"Scarface" tells the story of the rise and fall of a gangster, with "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" actor Diego Luna attached to play the West Coast Latino gangster Tony Montana. Dylan Clark will produce via his Dylan Clark Productions, along with Martin Bregman, who also produced the 1983 film which was directed by Brian De Palma and starred Al Pacino.

Meanwhile, Ayer is heading to the small screen with Netflix's fantasy movie "Bright" which stars Will Smith after directing the Warner Bros. antihero team-up movie "Suicide Squad", on which the helmer and the actor worked together. Ayer is also attached to a remake of "The Wild Bunch" and will reunite with Margot Robbie for "Suicide Squad" spin-off "Gotham City Sirens", in which the actress will reprise her role as the pig-tailed supervillain Harley Quinn.
