Pennywise Depicter Bill Skarsgard Makes Children Cry on 'It' Set

Some child extras on filming set were terrified by Skarsgard's clown outfit and makeup, whereas the Swedish actor just tried to be 'completely in character.'

AceShowbiz - It seems like clown monster Pennywise is not only terrorizing children on-screen, but also off-screen. Pennywise depicter Bill Skarsgard has admitted that he made child extras cry during the filming of one of "It" scenes. While some thought that Skarsgard's clown outfit and makeup were intriguing, several others were horrified.

"Some of them were really intrigued, but some couldn't look at me, and some were shaking," said the Swedish actor to his brother Alexander Skarsgard for Interview Magazine.

Skarsgard went on saying, "This one kid started crying. He started to cry and the director yelled, 'Action!' And when they say 'action,' I am completely in character. So some of these kids got terrified and started to cry in the middle of the take, and then I realized, 'Holy s**t. What am I doing? What is this? This is horrible.' "

Skarsgard added that for the sake of his character, he wasn't particularly "friendly or goofy" during filming. "It's a really weird thing to go, 'If I succeed at doing what I'm trying to do with this character, I'll traumatize kids.' On set, I wasn't very friendly or goofy. I tried to maintain some sort of weirdness about the character, at least when I was in all the makeup," Skarsgard said.

However, Skarsgard made sure to say sorry to the children once the filming stopped. "But then we cut, and obviously I was all, 'Hey, I'm sorry. This is pretend,' " said the actor.

Directed by Andres Muschietti and based on Stephen King's novel, "It" follows seven children known as The Losers Club who have to face life problems, bullies and killer monster Pennywise. The clown monster haunts Derry, Maine, every 30 years and terrorizes its victims by exploiting their fears and phobias.

"It" will be split into two movies, with the first movie being set to be released in the U.S. on September 8. The second movie, meanwhile, reportedly will start filming on March 17, six months before the release of the first film.
