James Wan Is on Board to Produce 'Resident Evil' Reboot, Milla Jovovich Comments on the Project
Movie

Jovovich, who starred in all the original 'Resident Evil' movie series, is seemingly surprised when learning that there will be a reboot and says, 'Okay, well good luck with that.'

AceShowbiz - Following recent news that Constantin Film would develop untitled Resident Evil reboot, an announcement about its producer emerges. Deadline reports that "Aquaman" helmer James Wan is on board to produce the first installment of the reboots.

Wan will produce the movie from a script by "Mortal Kombat" writer Greg Russo. It is reported that the reboot will have an entirely new cast. So far, there hasn't been any director attached to the project.

The reboot actually comes as a surprise to Milla Jovovich, who starred in all the original "Resident Evil" movie series. When asked about whether she would like to see her daughter, who starred in "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter", in the next franchise, Jovovich says, "They've announced a reboot?" She goes on saying, "Okay, well good luck with that."

Of the studio's decision to develop a reboot, Jovovich says, "I think a lot of people with these franchises kind of put the cart before the horse. There's a danger to that. They've been wanting to reboot 'Resident Evil' for a long time, and listen: I love the 'Resident Evil' world. I think it's a great property, I would do it if I was a producer. I think what made 'Resident Evil' so special is that the people involved really loved what they're doing and really were fans of the game."

She later adds, "I would suggest that you find people that have that same passion for the property before you talk about reboots. I think if you get into this kind of genre, people are very sensitive to fakes. There's some real fans in the sci-fi/action/horror world, and they're not idiots. They can smell when something is done because people love it and when something is done just to monetize an opportunity."

The original "Resident Evil" movie franchise was based on the Capcom video game and launched in 2002, with Paul W.S. Anderson directing and Anderson, Jeremy Bolt, Bernd Eichinger and Samuel Hadida producing the first movie. It followed protagonist Alice, a security operative working for evil Umbrella Corporation who eventually became the enemy of the corporation.

The franchise consists of "Resident Evil", "Resident Evil: Apocalypse", "Resident Evil: Extinction", "Resident Evil: Afterlife", "Resident Evil: Retribution" and "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter". The franchise has earned $1.2 billion worldwide, being the highest-grossing film series based on video game. "The Final Chapter" was set to put an end on the original franchise last January, earning $312 million worldwide after its release.
