Cress Williams suits up as the DC superhero in the first official image from the upcoming TV adaptation of the comic books.

AceShowbiz - The CW has unveiled the first look at Cress Williams as Black Lightning. The "Hart of Dixie" alum plays the titular character a.k.a. Jefferson Pierce on the potential new series adapted from DC comic book series. He suits up in the hero's costume in the image.

The show will center on Jefferson Pierce who is forced to come out of his retirement as a vigilante due to a daughter hell-bent on justice and a star student being recruited by a local gang. Should The CW move forward with the project, it will be the first black superhero series on traditional television.

Salim Akil writes the script and directs the pilot. "I was about 13 when Black Lightning was created, and finally there was a Black Super Hero that gave a damn about our neighborhood and our lives," Akil says of the DC hero. "Resurrecting him at a time in our society when a sense of hope is lacking...Black Lightning will be that hope. And in updating the suit, it will signal to a new generation that it’s time to harness and release our power, and become our own Super Heroes."

Akil also serves as executive producer along with Mara Brock Akil, Sarah Schechter and Greg Berlanti, the producer of various DC TV series like "Arrow", "The Flash", "Supergirl" and "DC's Legends of Tomorrow". The pilot is currently filmed in Atlanta.

Joining the cast are Nafessa Williams ("Code Black") and China Anne McClain ("House of Payne") as DC female superheroes Thunder a.k.a. Annisa and Lightning a.k.a. Jennifer respectively. Both are the daughters of Pierce.
