'Kong: Skull Island' was initially expected to gain around $40-$50 million on its debut weekend, but it's actually stronger than expected.

AceShowbiz - "Kong: Skull Island" roared louder than expected in its first weekend at North American box office. The movie starring Brie Larson, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. "Kong: Skull Island", which is directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, was initially expected to gain around $40-$50 million on its debut weekend, but it performed better thanks to its attribute as one of the oldest franchises in Hollywood history. Since the first "Kong" success in 1933, the franchise with the iconic ape has spanned movies, theme park attraction, video games and toys. Thus, people has been very familiar to it and seemingly craving for more.

Warner's president Jeff Goldstein said that the movie also got an advantage from a great marketing. "On these kind of movies that have big Fridays, you would expect to be down on Saturday. We were up 19 percent," said Goldstein. "We ended up in a fantastic place compared to where we thought we would be. The marketing came together in a huge way."

Meanwhile, Hugh Jackman's last Wolverine movie "Logan" dropped to No. 2 on its second weekend, gaining $38.1 million in North America. The movie directed by James Mangold had a domestic total of $153 million and grossed a massive $438.3 million internationally.
