The latest episode offers a shocking revelation of the man behind Prometheus' mask, as the production team decides to give 'a really fun twist' on the series.

AceShowbiz - After months of waiting and speculation, the man behind Prometheus' mask is finally revealed during the 14th episode of "Arrow" season 5. The identity of the Big Bad, who has been tormenting Oliver (Stephen Amell) throughout the season, is unveiled in a major twist in an episode titled "Fighting Fire With Fire", which aired on Wednesday, March 1.

[SPOILER ALERT!] After a fight against Vigilante, Prometheus removes his mask and reveals himself as Star City District Attorney Adrian Chase (Josh Segarra). The revelation comes as a big surprise for the comic fans, as in the comics, Chase's alter ego is Vigilante.

"Yes, we have used the comic mythos to misdirect people, straight up," Amell told Entertainment Weekly. "Although Vigilante does exist and he is somebody, Chase is Prometheus," he added.

Executive producer Wendy Mericle said in a call with reporters last week that they decided to take an unpredictable route with the script "because everybody would be thinking, 'Of course he's going to be Vigilante.' " She added, "We thought it would be a really fun twist to...take the comic-book mythology and turn it on its head and see what kind of story we can mine from a surprise like that. It was also something different for this season. We wanted to change up how we introduced the Big Bad and we did it."

Mericle added, "One of the fun things that we've done is to allow us to live with that reveal for a while, and to see the characters not knowing and still continuing to interact with Adrian Chase at City Hall and elsewhere."

Actor Segarra was as surprised as anyone else. He said with a laugh, "I got to Vancouver thinking I was playing Vigilante." He continued, "I was reading Vigilante comics and reading about Chase, and I got to work and I was talking to Marc [Guggenheim] like, 'I'm doing my research, I'm being studious about the Vigilante guy,' and he was like, 'What do you mean? That's not what you're playing.' "

During the episode, Chase is threatening and seemingly kidnapping Susan Williams (Carly Pope). He continues Prometheus' task, tormenting Oliver by kidnapping Susan, who is in a romantic relationship with Oliver until Thea (Willa Holland) fires her.

About the kidnap, Mericle said, "He's going after people Oliver cares about." She went on saying, "We've seen villains do that in the past, but this year Adrian does it in a way that's more specific. He has no drive to kill Oliver, it's purely based on torture." She later concluded that "it's all part-and-parcel to break Oliver down psychologically."

Segarra added, "There's a means-to-and-end for each moves that he makes." He went on with his analogy saying that Chase was like a moving piece and Susan was a very important piece to that puzzle. He continued, "And Susan may feel betrayed by Oliver, so it's interesting to see how Chase will navigate those waters-how he can get to his next move."

"Arrow" airs Wednesdays at 8 P.M. on The CW.
