AceShowbiz - Robert Downey Jr. will portray a real-life charlatan in a new movie directed by Richard Linklater. The untitled Robert Downey Jr. project is based on "Man of the People", an episode from Gimlet Media's "Reply All" podcast.

"Man of the People" follows the true story of Dr. John Brinkley, a notorious con man who scammed his way to fame and fortune using fake medicine, populism and new technology radio in the 1920s. His popularity caught the attention of Dr. Morris Fishbein, the editor of America Medical Association's journal who later took a long quest to take Brinkley down.

Besides starring in the movie, Downey Jr. will produce it along with Susan Downey and Megan Ellison from Annapurna Pictures. Linklater is co-producing the film alongside P.J. Vogt, Tim Howard and Chris Giliberti.

Downey Jr. most recently starred as Tony Stark/Iron Man in 2016's "Captain America: Civil War". The 51-year-old actor will reprise the role in the upcoming "Spider-Man: Homecoming" and "Avengers: Infinity War". Downey Jr. is also announced to return as Sherlock Holmes in "Sherlock Holmes 3".

Linklater is known for directing critically-acclaimed "Boyhood" and "Before Sunrise" movie series. "Boyhood" earned Linklater accolades from Golden Globe Awards and BAFTAs. The movie was also nominated for Best Picture at the 87th Academy Awards.
