Denis Villeneuve Officially Signs On to Helm 'Dune' Reboot
Movie

The 'Arrival' director will continue his sci-fi streak after the critically-acclaimed 'Arrival' and upcoming 'Blade Runner 2049' by directing Frank Herbert's novel-adapted movie.

AceShowbiz - Back in December, Denis Villeneuve was reported as the possible director for Legendary Pictures' adaptation of the legendary novel by Frank Herbert, "Dune". Now, it has been officially announced that the director of Oscar-nominated "Arrival" will serve behind the lens for the upcoming movie.

The author's son as well as executive producer for the movie, Brian Herbert, took to social media to confirm the news. He shared the exciting news on his Twitter account on Tuesday, January 31.

"Dune" reboot will be another sci-fi pic to be added to Villeneuve's filmography after the highly-praised "Arrival" and the upcoming "Blade Runner 2049", a sequel to Ridley Scott's classic 80s sci-fi tale which is currently in post-production. Months before Legendary picked the rights to the "Dune" franchise, Villeneuve had expressed his interest in directing "Dune".

He told Variety in an interview back in September, "I had been wanting to do sci-fi for a very long time." He continued, "I'm always looking for sci-fi material, and it's difficult to find original and strong material that's not just about weaponry. A longstanding dream of mine is to adapt 'Dune', but it's a long process to get the rights, and I don't think I will succeed. Also I would love to write something myself. I have two [sci-fi] projects right now that are in very stages. It's too early to talk about them."

Villeneuve has his directorial breakthrough with his hit thrillers, including "Sicario" and "Prisoners". He also received his first Best Director Oscar nomination for his work on "Arrival", which stars Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker.

"Dune" is a novel written in 1965 and considered to be one of the 20th century's all-time best novels. It follows the protagonist of the novel, Paul Atreides, whose family is in charge of Arrakis. Arrakis, which its inhabitants call Dune, is a desert planet that contains a mysterious and highly addictive chemical called Spice which allows memory transfer, visions of the future and greatly expanded life span. The story then explores themes of politics, religion and human-nature relationship as Paul and his family are betrayed. The betrayal leads him to fight for control of Arrakis and the Spice.

There have been several attempts to adapt the novel over the years, including David Lynch's flopped 1984 movie, starring "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." actor Kyle MacLachlan. In 2000, another adaptation directed by John Harrison was more well-received than the previous one. Harrison's miniseries even won two Emmys for its technical work.

Richard P. Rubinstein, Thomas Tull, Mary Parent and Cale Boyter are set to produce the latest take on the novel.
