Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam Gets a Solo Movie as DC Splits 'Shazam'

After nearly a decade in development hell, DC reportedly splits 'Shazam' to debut its villain Black Adam in a standalone movie.

AceShowbiz - In 2008, almost a decade ago, DC and New Line announced that they would bring DC superhero Shazam to big screen. And yet, Shazam himself has not been cast. The only thing confirmed is that "Furious 7" actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is attached to the movie in the role of Shazam's nemesis, Black Adam.

Last week, a big meeting regarding the movie was held and attended by Johnson, DC Films co-head and the comic author Geoff Johns. The meeting resulted in decision to split "Shazam" movie and debut Black Adam in his own solo movie, The Hollywood Reporter reports. The decision was made apparently because DC cannot and will not let a highly bankable and big star like Johnson be just a villain and supporting character. Thus, they decided to make a separated spin-off for the "Moana" voice actor.

Now, the studios reportedly plan to develop both "Shazam" and the Black Adam movie concurrently. In his own standalone film, Black Adam will be an antihero. It follows the recent developments of the character in the original comics, written by Geoff Johns.

Other than this news, there is no other detail revealed yet regarding who will serve as writer and director for the movie. A release date is far to be confirmed.

Last week, The Rock took to social media to tease fans regarding this big news. In the post he shared on January 11, he wrote, "Had a very cool and strategic meeting with the heads of DC about their entire universe. As a hard core DC fan, to get a real sense of the tonal shifts and developments coming in these future movies has me fired up. Something we, as DC fans have all been waiting for for a very long time. Hope, optimism & FUN. Even when talking about the the most ruthless villain/anti-hero of all time finally coming to life. Prepare yourselves DC Universe. #KneelAtHisFeet #OrGetCrushedByHisBoot #BlackAdam."
