The upcoming installment of the FX horror anthology series will be set in modern day and brings back Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters in the cast.

AceShowbiz - FX and Ryan Murphy have more tales to tell. The network has renewed "American Horror Story" for two more seasons, months before the seventh season airs, taking the hit anthology series through a ninth season.

John Landgraf, CEO of FX Networks and FX Productions, announced the renewal during the cabler's panel at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena, Calif. on Thursday, January 12.

" 'American Horror Story' launched the modern limited series revolution and - as evidenced by the most recent installment 'Roanoke' - it remains as vital today as when 'Murder House' stunned audiences six years ago," Landgraf said. "Each new chapter is a cultural event, beloved for every new twist in imagery, style, cast and plot. We are thrilled that Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and the entire creative team will continue to deliver the groundbreaking, celebrated 'American Horror Story' for years to come."

In the sixth season, "AHS" brought in nearly 11 million total viewers and ranked first among all limited cable series of 2016 among adults 18-49 and adults 18-34. The show also ranked third among all 215 scripted cable series in total viewers last year.

At the TCA, Murphy who attended the panel shared details of season 7. "It's a modern-day story," he teased about the plot, adding that Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters would once again return. On whether they would keep the show's theme a mystery like they did for season 6, Murphy said they might not do it again like last year.

"There are only three people in the world who know what [the new season is about]," said the series co-creator. "And that's FX CEO John Landgraf, [studio executive] Dana Walden, and Sarah Paulson." He continued, "I don't know [if we'll keep it quiet]. Last year was successful. I don't know if we'll do it again. I think maybe we'll release some of it earlier than we did."

On the other hand, Landgraf hinted that he planned to keep the theme a secret. "It actually will be shrouded in super secrecy," he said. "Ryan has yet another really innovative idea for how to do something fresh and different with the franchise that audiences haven't seen before, and there's a marketing promotional hook around that."
