Evan Rachel Wood Opens Up About Getting Raped Twice

In the letter, which was released in full on Monday, the 'Westworld' actress says that as a rape survivor, she's 'still standing... alive... happy... strong,' but is 'not OK.'

AceShowbiz - Evan Rachel Wood surprised many of her fans when she revealed in her recent Rolling Stone interview that she had been raped twice in the past. Now, she offered more details about the sexual assaults in a letter posted on Twitter Monday, November 28.

The letter was originally sent to the publication on November 9, a day after the presidential election which saw Donald Trump coming out as the winner. A portion of it was included in the interview that was published on November 17.

In it, Wood noted that the abuse happened "many many years ago" and acknowledged that people might brand her an attention seeker for sharing her story. "I think, like a lot of women, I had the urge to not make it a sob story, to not make it about me," the actress shared. "I think deep down I also didn't want to be accused of doing it for attention, or told that it wasn't a big deal, or, 'That's not really rape.' "

But she chose to talk about it anyway because "I don't believe we live in a time where people can stay silent any longer. I certainly can't. Not given the state our world is in with its blatant bigotry and sexism." She continued, "It should be talked about because it's swept under the rug as nothing and I will not accept this as 'normal.' It's a serious problem."

She went on saying that as a rape survivor, she's "still standing... alive... happy... strong," but she's still "not OK." "I think it's important for people to know t hat, for survivors to own that, and that the pressure to just get over it already, should be lifted. It's not that you can't get over it, it's just that you are never the same, or maybe I just haven't gotten there yet," she said.

Wood then recalled being raped by her own "significant other" when they were still in a relationship. "The first time I was unsure that if it was done by a partner it was still in fact rape, until it's too late. Also who would believe me," she wrote.

The other man who raped her was a bar owner. "And the second time, I thought it was my fault and that I should have fought back more, but I was scared," she continued, adding that she now knew that "neither one was my fault and neither one was ok."

Wood, who sat down with Rolling Stone to promote her hit series "Westworld", also addressed her bisexuality and her suicide attempt elsewhere in the interview. "Nearly half of bisexual women have considered or attempted suicide, they have higher rates of mood disorders such as depression and anxiety, one in two bisexual women has experienced severe violence by an intimate partner," she explained at the time.

She tried to take her own life when she was 22 and it was "weirdly, the best-worst thing that ever happened to me. 'Cause it did not work."
