Doug Liman Reveals 'Edge of Tomorrow 2' Is 'a Sequel That's a Prequel'

The helmer says that the follow-up to 2014's 'Edge of Tomorrow' will serve as both a sequel and a prequel, adding that it will 'much better than the original film.'

AceShowbiz - "Edge of Tomorrow 2" will serve as both a sequel and a prequel to the first film, according to Doug Liman. While talking about his scripted supernatural VR series "Invisible" with Steve Weintrub of Collider, the helmer gave an update on the follow-up to 2014's "Edge of Tomorrow" starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.

"That is the only sequel that I'm considering doing," Liman said. "And it's because first of all the story is so amazing - much better than the original film, and I loved and loved the original film - and second of all, it's a sequel that's a prequel."

"I've had some radical ideas about how to make a sequel that would interest me, in the same way that I had ideas of how you make an independent film and then Swingers came along and it was like 'Aha, that's the perfect movie for me to test these ideas out on,' " the helmer shared.

"I had these intellectual ideas on how you should make a sequel that are unlike how anybody else makes a sequel, and this script and this idea fit perfectly into that idea. So it's gonna revolutionize how people make sequels," he added. "It's more heresy in the film world for me to pitch things that are sort of unheard of."

It's unclear if the time-traveling elements in the original movie will once again be used in the second movie. As of now, plot details are still kept under tight wraps. "Race" screenwriters Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse are on board to pen the script for the sequel, with Cruise set to return as Major William "Bill" Cage.

Liman reunites with Cruise in "American Made", a crime thriller centering on a pilot who lands work for the CIA and as a drug runner in the south during the 1980s. The movie is currently in post-production and scheduled to be released in U.S. theaters on September 29, 2017.
