'Stranger Things': Here's What Upside Down Is According to the Child Actors

Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin and Noah Schnapp share their theories about the mysteries of the hit Netflix series.

AceShowbiz - What is the Upside Down? Even after filming the first season of the Netflix thriller, "Stranger Things" stars are not sure what it is. In an interview with EW, the child actors who play the kids on the hit series try to explain the mysteries on the show.

"It's just another dimension," says Noah Schnapp, who struggles to define the Upside Down. "To get through it you have to, what was it? You have to get close to energy or something?" he adds with a laugh.

Gaten Matarazzo bluntly says, "It sucks." He then shares, "My theory is that there are other inhabitants in the Upside Down that are hiding, either underground or some [other] place. Maybe One through Ten are hiding in the Upside Down? Or maybe they're hiding in our dimension. Maybe they're among us?"

Caleb McLaughlin thinks "there's more to it." He explains, "There's more than just the Upside Down. The Upside Down was just in Hawkins. We don't know if it's around the world. So, it could just be another part of our world."

"Stranger Things" has been picked up for season two which is expected to debut in 2017. Producer and director Shawn Levy recently talked about the pressure of making the second season, "Yes, the pressure is on. It would be so blatantly disingenuous of me to say differently. It's scary to have people love something this much. It becomes impossible to banish all thoughts of not wanting to disappoint."

He continued, "This has been the challenge of it: on the one hand as we've seen in the movie world, to do a follow-up that feels like the same thing is disappointing to an audience; to abandon things or change things [from the original], that disappoints the audience. A lot of season 2 is next-level, some crazy stuff, but we must service these characters who are now beloved, who are known to the audience."

While the second season will feature new characters, it will still follow the beloved young protagonists. Co-creator Matt Duffer previously said they took inspirations from James Cameron for the sophomore set. He also dished on the setting, "We will venture a little bit outside of Hawkins. I will say the opening scene [of the premiere] does not take place in Hawkins."
