AceShowbiz - Ben Whishaw is being eyed for a key role in "Mary Poppins Returns". According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 35-year-old actor is in negotiations to join Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda in the sequel to 1964's "Mary Poppins".

If the deal is sealed, the British actor, who is known for his role as Q in "Skyfall" and "Spectre", will play a grown-up version of Michael Banks in the film which already has Meryl Streep in talks to portray Mary Poppins' cousin Topsy. Banks is the key figure in the new take, in which he will be featured experiencing a personal loss and seeing the return of his big sister Jane.

Rob Marshall will direct "Mary Poppins Returns", which is set for a December 25, 2018 release in U.S. theaters. The film reunites the helmer and Blunt after they worked together in 2014's "Into the Woods". The 33-year-old actress has been tapped to portray the titular character. As for the "Hamilton" star Miranda, he will portray a new character, a street lamplighter named Jack.

Set in Depression-era London, the sequel follows a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael's three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.
