'Suicide Squad' Officially Gets PG-13 Rating Despite Expected R Rating

The DC antihero movie dodges the restricted rating despite its dark tone suggested by director David Ayer.

AceShowbiz - It seems that "Suicide Squad" is not hardcore enough to get an R rating like it was initially suggested. The antihero movie that features Jared Leto's Joker and some other DC bad guys has officially received a PG-13 rating from MPAA ahead of its North American release on August 5.

Although the David Ayer-directed film might not be as wild as the foul-mouthed "Deadpool", it seems to be pushing the limits of the PG-13. It earns the rating for its "sequences of violence and action throughout, disturbing behavior, and suggestive content and language."

Ayer himself said that he was always aiming for a lower rating despite the movie's dark tone. "For an R movie, you have to decide to do it right out the gate, and that was never the case here," he said in April at CinemaCon. "We were always going to hit the PG-13 rating. But the film is meant to be that. It's got edge, and it's got attitude. And it's got its own voice ... There's a lot in the film that's going to surprise people."
