Finally! Sony Weighs In on Kesha and Her Alleged Abuser's Legal Battle

The recording company pinpoints the fact that the contract she made with her longtime producer does not belong to them.

AceShowbiz - Just one day after Ke$ha made a public plea for Sony to "do the right thing", the corporate broke its silence in a statement to NY Times. Sony's attorney explained that the company is not in power to break whatever deal was made between Kesha and her allegedly-abusive longtime producer Dr. Luke.

"Sony has made it possible for Kesha to record without any connection, involvement or interaction with Luke whatsoever, but Sony is not in a position to terminate the contractual relationship between Luke and Kesha," Scott A. Edelman, an attorney representing the company, told said on Thursday, February 25. "Sony is doing everything it can to support the artist in these circumstances, but is legally unable to terminate the contract to which it is not a party."

Kesha is signed to Kemosabe Records, which is a subsidiary of Sony, but her contract belongs to Dr. Luke's production company, Kasz Money, which has a separate deal with Sony's RCA/Jive subsidiary. The "TiK ToK" hitmaker is bound to make six albums with label, therefore she has a few more left before the contract is fulfilled.

And since no criminal charges has been filed against Luke, the label cannot terminate the contract based on allegations. However, the New York County Supreme Court ruled last week that Kesha was free to record and release music without working with Dr. Luke as a producer if she doesn't want to.

Kesha said in her allegations that Luke physically, sexually and emotionally abused her during their decade-old relationship. "This case has never been about a renegotiation of my record contract - it was never about getting a bigger, or a better deal," she wrote on Facebook Wednesday. "This is about being free from my abuser. I would be willing to work with Sony if they do the right thing and break all ties that bind me to my abuser."
