'Supergirl' Boss on How the Latest Death Will Affect Kara
TV

The major death in the latest episode 'weighs heavy on Kara in the upcoming episodes,' says executive producer Andrew Kreisberg.

AceShowbiz - Kara's life was in danger in the latest episode of "Supergirl" when a parasitic plant called the Black Mercy attached itself to her and caused her hallucination. She eventually survives, but she lost a family member in "For the Girl Who Has Everything".

[SPOILER ALERT!] When the Kryptonians launched an attack, Alex pled with Astra to take their side, but Hank a.k.a. the Martian Manhunter interrupted them. A fight broke out between Hank and Astra, and she nearly killed him. To save Hank, Alex stabbed Astra with a Kryptonite sword, sending her to her death.

Kara, however, is unaware that it was her sister Alex who killed her aunt because Hank took the blame. When Alex asked him why he lied to Kara, he replied, "Because you were Supergirl's hero. And I don't want her to see you as anything other than that."

While Kara clashed with Astra when they first met on Earth, losing her aunt will come as a blow to her. "The death of Astra weighs heavy on Kara in the upcoming episodes," executive producer Andrew Kreisberg tells EW, before explaining, "Kara believes in the inherent goodness of people. She thinks that deep down her aunt was more misguided than evil, and if she had more time, she could have brought her back into the light."

Astra's death will also give Non another reason to attack humans. As Kreisberg says, "the loss of his wife, who he truly loves, will make him a very dangerous foe."

As for why Astra was killed so soon while it appeared that she would be the big bad, Kreisberg shares, "Unfortunately due to Laura [Benanti]'s Broadway commitments, we were forced to end Astra's story at this point. But Laura will appear again as Alura, Kara's mother. And it's our fervent hope that we get to have Laura on Supergirl for many years to come."

"Supergirl" will not air new episode next week because of the 2016 Grammy Awards, and will return with "Truth, Justice and the American Way" on Monday, February 22 at 8/7c on CBS.
