Michael Pitt Tapped to Villainize Scarlett Johansson's 'Ghost in the Shell'

The 'Boardwalk Empire' actor will play the villainous hacker known as The Laughing Man in the film adapted from Japanese manga series by Masmune Shirow.

AceShowbiz - Michael Pitt is joining the cast of DreamWorks' "Ghost in the Shell". The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the actor, best known for playing a gangster on "Boardwalk Empire", is on board to play the villainous hacker The Laughing Man in the upcoming movie.

The character is described as an expert hacker capable of hijacking multiple video streams simultaneously, taking over someone's cybernetic brain entirely and editing his own images out of someone's cybernetic eyes.

"Ghost in the Shell", adapted from Japanese manga series by Masmune Shirow, is set in a futuristic society where nearly all humans have some amount of cybernetic implants. It centers on Section 9, an elite task force devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists.

Set for release in the U.S. on March 31, 2017, the film is directed by "Snow White and the Huntsman" helmer Rupert Sanders from the script by "Straight Outta Compton" scribe Jonathan Herman. Scarlett Johansson has been hired to portray Major Motoko Kusanagi, a female special ops cyborg who leads the task force. Pilou Asbaek is also in the cast.
