The 'Beasts of No Nation' actor is in early talks to portray the lead gunslinger in the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King's novel series.

AceShowbiz - Idris Elba is in early negotiations to star in "The Dark Tower", an adaptation of Stephen King's novel series. According to Deadline, the 43-year-old actor is eyed to portray lead gunslinger Roland Deschain.

If Elba really signs the deal, he may join Matthew McConaughey, who is currently in talks to portray the villainous Walter Padick a.k.a. Man in Black. Sony Pictures and MRC are co-financing the project with Nikolaj Arcel on board to direct the pic.

Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner write the screenplay, which is primarily based on the first book in the series, "The Gunslinger". The novel centers on Deschain, part of a knightly order of gunslingers, who is on a quest to find the tower before evil invades and destroys it.

Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman has described "The Dark Tower" as the start of a global franchise, saying that "there are few projects out there that compare with the scope, vision, complex characters and fully drawn world that Stephen King has created."

Brian Grazer and Erica Huggins will produce for Imagine Entertainment along with Goldsman and his Weed Road banner. Plot details and other cast members have yet to be announced. The adaptation is set to open in the U.S. on January 13, 2017.

Elba was recently eyed to star alongside Tom Cruise in "The Mummy", but he passed on the project last week. The British actor just earned a SAG nomination for his role in "Beasts of No Nation".
