'Kingsman' Star Sofia Boutella to Play Gender-Bending Title Role in 'Mummy' Remake

The 'Kingsman: Secret Service' actress is expected to play the title role in the upcoming remake set for 2017 release.

AceShowbiz - Rumor has it, the main villain in Universal's upcoming remake of "The Mummy" will be a female instead of a male like the original movies. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sofia Boutella is in talks to play the title role in the reboot.

Tom Cruise is in negotiations to play the protagonist who was originally portrayed by Brendan Fraser. Alex Kurtzman will serve behind the lens and Jon Spaihts writes a new treatment set in a modern-day world. It's due March 24, 2017.

Sofia Boutella is known for her role as a blade-legged assassin in "Kingsman: The Secret Service". She will next star in "Star Trek Beyond" which is scheduled for a July 22, 2016 release Stateside.

"The Mummy" is one of the many remakes planned by Universal as an effort to create an interconnected universe for their classic monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein, the Invisible Man, the Bride of Frankenstein, and vampire hunter Van Helsing.
