Series creator Noah Hawley says the third season will take place a couple years after the first season.

AceShowbiz - "Fargo" season 2 has not been wrapped up yet, but talks about the third season have begun following announcement of the show's renewal. Now, series creator Noah Hawley has revealed the time period of the next installment.

While the first season was set in 2006, the second chapter took viewers back to 1979. Hawley tells EW that the third season is "set a couple years after season 1." He adds, "It's more contemporary."

Asked if this means fans can see some characters from the first season, he coyly replies, "Potentially." Lou Solverson is featured in both seasons, though he's played by different actors (Keith Carradine in season 1 and Patrick Wilson in season 2). Solverson's daughter Molly (Allison Tolman), meanwhile, was a prominent character in the first season and has a minor role this year. Still, it's unclear whether they are among the returning characters.

Hawley notes that the show's setting will always be at least a few years ago because it's "based on a true story format." He explains, "The idea of the 'true story' is it always has to be at least a few years ago, because the idea is we finally know what really happened and it took time - because the book doesn't come out until five or six years after."

Hawley also responds to question about whether there are any hints about season 3 planted in the currently airing season 2. "There are going to be connections, the way the first year was connected to the movie and the second year was connected to the first, but I think part of the fun is figuring that stuff out and I wouldn't want to take that away from anybody," he says. "There will be definitely things that connect to something in our story."
