The actor is to receive the honorable Maltin Modern Master Award for his 'defining performance' in 'Black Mass'.

AceShowbiz - Johnny Depp is set to receive Santa Barbara International Film Festival's highest honor the Maltin Modern Master Award. The "Black Mass" star is to receive the nod at the 31st annual festival scheduled to take place on February 6.

"Johnny Depp is a true embodiment of a modern master," SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling said on Wednesday, November 4. "He has had a long and storied career that has shown his commitment to taking on compelling and dynamic roles. But in the gripping film 'Black Mass,' under the skillful direction of Scott Cooper, Johnny Depp delivers his defining performance to date."

The prize is given to "an individual who has enriched our culture through accomplishments in the motion picture industry." Previous recipients include Michael Douglas, Jodie Foster, Diane Keaton, Sean Penn and Cate Blanchett.

The award has been renamed to honor film critic and historian Leonard Maltin, who has moderated the event for several years. The honor is presented in tandem with a career retrospective at the Arlington Theater in Santa Barbara. The 31st annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival runs February 3 to 13, 2016. More honorees will be announced in the coming weeks.
