Sam Smith Premieres Heartbreaking New Song 'Drowning Shadows'

The emotional ballad is featured on the 'In the Lonely Hour' re-issue, which is coming out this Friday, November 6.

AceShowbiz - Last month, Sam Smith announced that he'd re-release his massively successful 2014 debut album, "In the Lonely Hour". Now, a brand new single from the British singer has arrived as a preview of the upcoming project titled "In the Lonely Hour: Drowning Shadows Edition".

Smith premiered the song called "Drowning Shadows" during Zane Lowe's Beats 1 radio show on Monday, November 2. Talking about the heartbreaking piano-driven ballad with the host, the 23-year-old entertainer said that the song was "the saddest" one he'd ever written.

He went on explaining the story behind the track, which he said was written even before his breakout hit "Stay With Me". He shared that the song was about him sitting in a taxi on his way home when he came to a crossroads. "One would lead to gay clubs and one would go home," he said. "I was in such a lonely sad place, I'd have to decide whether to stay out or go home."

Of why the ballad failed to make the cut to the original "In the Lonely Hour" album, he said, "I always loved it, but something didn't happen right with the production when we were going through different versions of it. Something didn't work. I thought of it recently when we were thinking about the repackage, and we went in and just did it with piano."

"The Drowning Shadows Edition" is coming out on November 6. "This is a present directly from me to my fans," Smith recently said of the re-issue. "This is my thank you to you all, and the final bow before my second album. Love you all."

In addition to "Drowning Shadows", the set boasts reworks of "Lay Me Down" featuring John Legend, "I'm Not the Only One" with A$AP Rocky and "Stay With Me" with Mary J. Blige. There will also be an acoustic version of Smith's latest collaboration with Disclosure, "Omen".
