The former 'Doctor Who' actor plays Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh, on the upcoming royal drama.

AceShowbiz - Matt Smith channels his inner royal. The former "Doctor Who" actor is seen transforming into Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh, on the set of his new Netlix series "The Crown" at Southwark Cathedral in London. He was joined by John Lithgow who will play Winston Churchill.

Based on Peter Morgan's play "The Audience" which starred Helen Mirren, the royal drama centers on Queen Elizabeth II and the prime ministers who shaped Britain's post-war destiny. Claire Foy is tapped to portray as the Queen.

The series tells the inside story of two of the most famous addresses in the world - Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street - and the intrigues, love lives and machinations behind the great events that shaped the second half of the 20th century.
