'I didn't expect them to support me in the way they did. Last time I was at an awards show, I was booed,' the 'What Do You Mean' singer explains why he got emotional while performing at the VMAs.

AceShowbiz - Justin Bieber made an appearance in the Wednesday night, September 2 episode of "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon". In addition to promoting his new single "What Do You Mean", the Canadian singer sat down with the show's host Jimmy Fallon and discussed his emotional moment at last weekend's MTV Video Music Awards.

As previously reported, Bieber cried while he was delivering the first live performance of the track at the event. On Fallon's late-night show, he told the comedian that he broke down in tears because of the positive reactions from fans he didn't know he would get.

"It was so overwhelming," said the 21-year-old heartthrob. "I missed some cues so I was a bit disappointed about that. But just the support... I didn't expect them to support me in the way they did. Last time I was at an awards show, I was booed."

During his appearance on "Tonight Show", Bieber also officially announced his new album's release date, which he forgot. "We don't know when the album's gonna drop, but we heard that you might have an exclusive thing to tell us?" Fallon asked Bieber, who replied, "I do... But I forget the date."

The album, which will be his first proper LP since 2012's "Believe", is coming out on November 13. "I've worked so hard at this album, I've worked so hard at just becoming the man I want to become," he explained to Fallon.

Additionally, Bieber blamed "a bunch of knuckleheads around me" for his misbehaviors in the past. "And it's never good to have knuckleheads around," he said. "I just went through a place of trying to figure it out. You have to figure out what you're OK with and what you're not OK with, but you have to test the waters. I just happened to be in the spotlight, in front of cameras all the time, and they caught all those moments."

Later that night, Bieber performed "What Do You Mean" live for the second time. He was backed by the show's house band The Roots.
