Frank Dillane's character opens the new series by discovering that zombie apocalypse is happening right under his residence.

AceShowbiz - On the brink of "Fear the Walking Dead" premiere this Sunday, August 23, AMC released the first three minutes of "The Walking Dead" spin-off. Unlike the original series which opens with its hero cop Rick Grimes, the spin-off kicks off with a junkie.

Nick, played by Frank Dillane, wakes up in an abandoned church and tries to find someone named Gloria. The tension grows as Nick fails to get a reply and finds chunks of bloody human flesh. The scene gets more gruesome as he moves downstairs and meets one of the walking deads.

According to the synopsis, Nick is the son of Madison, a guidance counselor played by Kim Dickens. Madison is romantically involved with Travis, the protagonist teacher played by Cliff Curtis. Made as a companion series, "Fear the Walking Dead" is set in Los Angeles at the beginning of the outbreak when Rick lies in a coma in Georgia.

Dave Erickson, who created the series with "The Walking Dead" executive producer Robert Kirkman, said the zombies wouldn't be referred to as the Walkers. "What we didn't want to do was go from zero to the apocalypse that quickly," said Erickson. "It's important to invest in the characters before they're overwhelmed."

Prone to comparisons, the series has its own distinctions. "It's a great privilege. Not many shows have the built-in expertise and creativity of this team, coupled with a new and fresh approach and location," Erickson explained.
