The memoir chronicles the rock star's early days in New York City with lover/best friend Robert Mapplethorpe before they found their true passions.

AceShowbiz - Patti Smith's miniseries is heading to Showtime. The network has tapped "Penny Dreadful" creator John Logan to work with Smith in adapting her New York Times best-selling memoir "Just Kids" into a limited series.

The memoir chronicles Smith's early days in New York City with lover/best friend Robert Mapplethorpe during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Before she's famous as a punk rock star, she worked in a bookstore, writing poems and creating collage-like art.

Smith will co-write and produce the TV adaptation. She said in a press release, "A limited series on Showtime will allow us to explore the characters more deeply, enabling us to develop stories beyond the book and allow a measure of unorthodox presentation. The medium of a television limited series offers narrative freedom and a chance to expand upon the themes of the book."

Showtime president David Nevins added, " 'Just Kids' is one of my favorite memoirs of all time. Not only is it a fascinating portrait of artists coming of age, but it's also an inspiring story of friendship, love and endurance. I'm so thrilled that Patti Smith will bring her unique voice to writing the scripts along with the gifted John Logan, who has been doing such a phenomenal job with 'Penny Dreadful' for us."

In addition to "Just Kids" miniseries, Showtime has ordered a pilot to Jim Carrey's hour-long drama "I'm Dying Up Here". Based on the nonfiction novel by William Knoedelseder, it centers on L.A.'s celebrated and infamous stand-up comedy scene of the 1970s.

Dave Flebotte is on board to write and executive produce the dark comedy pilot, with Carrey, Michael Aguilar and Christina Wayne also serving as executive producers. Jonathan Levine will direct the pilot, which is scheduled to shoot this coming fall.
